Stainless Steel basically is an alloy of Iron with a minimum 10.5% of Chromium in it. The Chromium produces a thin layer of oxide on the surface of the steel known as the ‘passive steel’ and hence the “Stainless” appearance. Increasing the amount of Chromium increases the resistance against the corrosion of the steel. Along with Chromium, Stainless Steel also contains varying amounts of Carbon, Silicon and Manganese. Other elements such as Nickel and Molybdenum may be added to impart other useful properties such as enhanced sturdiness and increased corrosion resistance. As an element, Stainless steel is 100% recyclable, corrosion-resistant, conserving-free, tenacious and hygienic.

The stainless steel family tree has several branches which may be differentiated in a variety of ways e.g. in terms of their areas of application, by the alloying elements used in their production or perhaps the most accurate way, by the metallurgical phases present in their microscopic structures –

Austenitic : Austenitic steels have extended as their primary phase (face centered cubic crystal). These are alloys containing chromium and nickel (sometimes manganese and nitrogen), structured around the Type 302 composition of iron, 18% chromium, and 8% nickel. Austenitic steels are not hardenable by heat treatment. The most familiar stainless steel is probably Type 304, sometimes called T304 or simply 304. Type 304 surgical stainless steel is an austenitic steel containing 18-20% chromium and 8-10% nickel.

Austenitic types have good to excellent type of corrosion resistance, and has exceptional molding ability and durability.

Ferritic : Ferritic steels have ferrite (body centered cubic crystal) as their main phase. These steels contain iron and chromium, based on the Type 430 composition of 17% chromium. Ferritic steel is less ductile than austenitic steel and is not hardenable by heat treatment. Molybdenum may be combined to some grades to improve corrosion resistance. These type of steels are magnetic because of their ferritic structure.

Martensitic : The characteristic orthorhombic martensite microstructure was first observed by German microscopist Adolf Martens around 1890. Martensitic steels are low carbon steels built around the Type 410 composition of iron, 12% chromium, and 0.12% carbon. They may be tempered and hardened. Martensite gives steel great hardness, but it also reduces its toughness and makes it brittle, so few steels are fully hardened. These grades contain no, or small, amounts of nickel, and molybdenum is seldom added. Adding some nickel and reducing the carbon content improves the poor weldability of martensitic grades.

Duplex Steels are a combination of Ferritic as well as Austenitic elements, and merges the properties of both the components so as to create a hybrid type of steel. Duplex Steels are mainly characterized by the high Chromium content (20.1 -25.4%) and low Nickel content (1.4 – 7%). Due to the low Nickel content, it makes the Duplex Steel price secure. Molybdenum (0.3 – 4%) and Nitrogen are added to increase corrosion resistance.

The production process can be divided separately for different type of fasteners:

Nuts : Nuts are manufactured from hex bars. The hex bars are subject to CNC Machining that ensures the nuts are compatible with the bolts of the given size.

Bolts : The bolts are manufactured from round bars either original bright or forged. The bolts are then threaded as per size. The head is either round, hex or of different shape as required in order specification.

Washers : Washers are manufactured from plates. The size of hold depends on the bolt and nut along with which it has to be used.

The Processing of steel carp and alloy together leads to the production of Stainless Steel. The amount of Alloy mixed decides the capability of the Steel works.

But still they are following steps:

1. Step one is to melt the metal including alloy and non-alloy into an electric arc furnace and later on adding the chemical energy like carbon, ferrosilicon, oxygen or fuel gas mixtures to speed up the process

2. After the melting process is done. The melts still is further processed in AOD which is Argon-Oxygen Decarburization. In which the carbon content is reduced and the mixture of Argon and Oxygen is added.

3. If we need low amount of Argon and oxygen then melted steel is added to the VOD which is Vacuum Oxygen Decarburization. And then melted steel is poured on the ladle
