First discovered by Anders Ekeberg in 1802, Tantalum is one of the rare metals found in the earth. It is shiny, hard, blue-gray and is a lustrous transition type of metal that is highly corrosion resistant. This metal has a very high melting point which is only transcended by tungsten and rhenium. It is one of the major five refractory metals (i.e. metals that are highly resistant to heat and wear). Tantalum is mainly found in the impure class of minerals which are tantalite and euxenite. It is also a by-product from the extraction of tin. Usually, tantalum is not known to have any biological role, it is usually non-toxic. Tantalum is one of the most unreactive metals. At room temperature, it reacts only with fluorine gas and certain fluorine compounds. Fluorine, a non-metal, is the most active element. At higher temperatures, tantalum becomes more active. Above about 150°C (300°F), it reacts with acids and alkalis.

  • One of the most high corrosion resistant metals.
  • Tantalum metal is very hard and at the same time, very malleable and ductile too.
  • It is highly conductive to heat and electricity.
  • Tantalum has a high melting point of 3017 °C.
  • It is almost impervious to any outside forces as well as any kind of chemical attack.
  • High-temperature applications such as aircraft engines.
  • Electrical devices such as capacitors.
  • Surgical implants such as artificial joints and cranial plates, and surgical sutures.
  • In the chemical industry e.g. for a heat exchanger in boilers in which strong acids are vapourised.
  • As a substitute for platinum, which is more expensive.
